Climate, weather, and seasons in Mallorca

The weather in Mallorca is the Mediterranean with mild winters and hot and sunny summers, with a constant breeze. Rainfall is not abundant, on average 55 days a year, and is more frequent in the cold semester, in contrast, the summer is dry with a low probability of rain. The average temperature ranges from a maximum of 15 °C to 30 °C and minimums between 8 °C and 10 °C. Rainfall fluctuates depending on the area of the island, being rainier in the highlands such as Sierra de Tramuntana.

Winter

The winter in Mallorca, from December to February, is not strong and presents sunny days and mild nights where the temperature can even drop to 0 °C, with frosts. It is a period of wind and rain.

• The maximum temperature is around 12 °C and the minimum is 10 °C with 18 days of rain during the season (118 mm). Few days with ideal weather conditions for kitesurfers and windsurfers.
• The water temperature remains much higher in other areas of Spain, usually not lower than 14 °C which makes it a more appropriate place during this period.

Spring

Spring in Mallorca goes from mid-March to mid-June, the average temperature is 17 °C. As for rainfall, it is a period of low rainfall with only 90 mm and 12 rainy days in the whole season.

• From April onwards the thermal winds make this period the best time for kitesurfing, 85% of the days with good weather conditions.

Summer

Summer in Mallorca starts in mid-June and lasts until mid-September. The maximum temperatures are 30 °C and the minimum is 25 °C. Rainfall is approximately 7 days (58 mm).

• There are restrictions for kitesurfing which makes it an unattractive season, the only place available on the island is the Bay of Pollensa. June and July have wind 99% of the days, with at least 10 knots. It is an ideal season for windsurfing. High probability of thermal winds.
• Towards August the warming of the water begins to change the quality of the wind and the possibility of thermal winds is complicated, however, the probability is still high.

Autumn

Autumn in Mallorca, between the end of September and the beginning of December, is the rainiest period with 25 days of rainfall (189 mm). The average temperature is between 16 °C and 18 °C.

• Very unreliable weather for kitesurfing lessons due to the weather conditions. Therefore it is not recommended for beginners.
• The rains are passing and isolated, it does not rain on the whole island, the eastern areas remain on average dry. With the arrival of the rains, the thermal windbreaks and the windsurfing season are practically over.

Best time to travel

The best period to visit Mallorca for kitesurfers is spring without a doubt since there are no restrictions in the different areas of the island for the practice of this sport. It is also the period with the best weather conditions. On the other hand, for windsurfers, the best season is June and July, where the thermal wind is guaranteed. It is advisable to be aware of the restrictions for the practice of these sports on the island.
